Upside Foods and Good Meat, both based in California, have been granted permission to sell their cell-cultured chicken products in the United States.
Cell-cultivated meat is created by fermenting animal cells, which eliminates the necessity for animal killing. Upside Foods and Good Meat will first sell their goods in restaurants.
Good Meat has collaborated with a restaurant in Washington, DC, while Upside Foods has already received its first order from Bar Crenn in San Francisco. The United States Department of Agriculture has also approved their product labeling, and both companies have obtained inspection funds. Only Singapore previously permitted the selling of grown chicken. Good Meat was the first to get approval from both the European Union and the United States Food and Drug Administration.
Meat production is a complex and expensive process, but numerous countries, like the United Kingdom, are supporting the business. Other companies around the world are nearing the completion of their cell-cultured beef products. The recent approvals, according to venture investors, will boost the industry, but they underline the necessity of technological improvements and differentiation. For navigating regulatory risks, transparency and early contact with authorities are critical. Overall, the certification of Upside Foods and Good Meat is a huge step forward in the alternative protein industry.
