AI Revolutionizes Wildfire Detection: California Firefighters Embrace New Technology

California Firefighters Embrace AI for Wildfire Detection

California firefighters have turned to artificial intelligence (AI) to assist in the detection of wildfires. The ALERTCalifornia AI program, launched last month, utilizes over 1,000 strategically placed cameras across the state to feed video to a machine that alerts first responders when to mobilize.

Swift Response Demonstrates AI’s Potential

The potential of the program was demonstrated when a camera detected a fire in the Cleveland National Forest, east of San Diego, in the early hours of the morning. Despite people being asleep and the smoke concealed by darkness, the AI alerted a fire captain who swiftly mobilized 60 firefighters to extinguish the fire within 45 minutes.

AI Technology and Data Collection

The AI technology was developed by engineers at the University of California San Diego, using AI from DigitalPath. It depends on 1,038 cameras installed by public agencies and power utilities throughout California. Each camera is capable of a 360° rotation controlled remotely. The machine learning process involves specialists reviewing previously recorded video from the camera network and providing binary yes or no feedback to the machine. Beyond the camera network, the AI platform collects extensive data, including aerial surveys for quantifying potential fuel sources for future fires and mapping terrain. This data is available to private companies and academic researchers, holding potential for environmental research and development of new AI applications in modeling fire behavior.
