Big News: Google Domains to Be Acquired by Squarespace

Squarespace Acquires Google Domain Assets

Squarespace, the renowned website construction platform, has announced the acquisition of the assets of Google Domains, the company’s domain registration service. The transfer of about 10 million registered names housed on Google names is part of the deal. The asset transfer is likely to be completed by the third quarter of 2023, with Google and Squarespace entering into an agreement.

Customer Impact and Transition Period

Google Domains will go through a transition period as it winds down its activities as a result of this acquisition. Customers that purchased domains through Google Workspace will be billed by Squarespace. Squarespace is well-known as a Google Workspace reseller. Following the acquisition, Squarespace will become the official domains provider for clients purchasing a domain in conjunction with their Google Workspace subscription for a minimum of three years. Squarespace will also offer invoicing and support to Google Workspace users who registered for the service through Google Domains.

Squarespace’s View and Domain Business

Anthony Casalena, Founder and CEO of Squarespace, expressed delight about being chosen to serve Google Domains consumers. He stressed the significance of domains in web infrastructure and corporate online presence. Squarespace not only provides website construction services, but it also sells domain names. Squarespace’s domain registration business will gain around 10 million new consumers as a result of this acquisition. Squarespace domains range in price from $20 to $70, and as part of the acquisition agreement, the firm has promised to honoring current Google Domain pricing for a year.

Industry Reaction and Growth Pathway

Many people were taken aback by the news of this acquisition, and reactions in the search marketing world and outside were varied. Google Domains is well-liked for its simple interface and ease of usage. Some users raised concerns about the service’s adjustments and the potential loss of the simplicity they valued. This acquisition is a natural move for Squarespace, as many companies in the field provide domain registration services in addition to hosting, marketing, and other associated services.
