Transforming Cities with Self-Cooling Artificial Turf

A new artificial turf that cools itself by storing rainwater and using capillary action to reduce surface temperatures offers a safer, more sustainable option for urban sports fields. This innovative solution, developed by Dutch scientists, integrates a subsurface water storage and capillary irrigation system that significantly lowers surface temperatures compared to conventional artificial turf.

Innovative Cooling System

The system includes an open water storage layer beneath the artificial turf, where rainwater is stored and transported back to the surface to evaporate, providing a cooling effect. According to Dr. Marjolein van Huijgevoort from KWR Water Research Institute, this method leverages natural processes and weather conditions to achieve evaporative cooling only when necessary.

Field Experiment in Amsterdam

In a field experiment in Amsterdam, researchers replaced conventional turf with self-cooling turf. They found that on hot days, the self-cooling turf’s surface temperature was significantly lower than that of conventional turf. For instance, on a hot day in June 2020, the self-cooling turf reached 37°C compared to the 62.5°C of conventional turf.

Environmental and Practical Benefits

This cooling turf combines the durability of artificial turf with the cooling benefits of natural grass. It reduces urban heat island effects and stormwater drainage issues by storing rainwater. Although installation costs are higher, a cost-benefit analysis could determine its overall value.

Economic and Practical Advantages

The installation costs for this innovative cooling system can be up to twice as high as conventional artificial turf. However, the researchers emphasize the need for a full-scale cost-benefit analysis to determine the true value of this investment. In addition, they highlight the potential for this system to be more economical in the long term due to its environmental benefits and reduced maintenance costs.

Future Research and Potential

Further research is needed to explore the impact of cooling turf in different climates and with varying materials. The initial results are promising, highlighting the potential for creating healthier urban environments.

The self-cooling turf system shows significant benefits without the downsides of conventional artificial turf.
