Anthropic’s Claude AI assistant app climbed to No. 1 on Apple’s top free apps ranking in the U.S., overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT (No. 2) and Google’s Gemini (No. 4), following renewed public attention around the startup’s stance on government use of its models.

The spike comes just a day after reports that the U.S. administration sought to restrict federal adoption of Anthropic’s technology, amid controversy tied to national security and defense procurement.

Government Pressure, Consumer Momentum

According to the report, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asked for Anthropic to be labeled a supply-chain risk, which would prevent U.S. defense contractors from using Anthropic tools.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei responded that while it is the government’s prerogative to choose contractors, the company hopes decision-makers reconsider due to the value its technology can provide.

Anthropic has also made headlines for declining to allow its models to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, a position that has amplified visibility and debate.

Claude’s Growth Accelerates

Market data cited in the report indicates that Claude gained momentum throughout February:

  • On Jan. 30, Claude ranked No. 131 in the U.S.

  • It moved into the top 20 for much of February

  • It reached No. 1 late Saturday

Anthropic also claimed strong product growth signals, including rising free user counts and accelerating sign-ups, while competition in consumer AI apps intensifies.

Why It Matters

Claude’s rise highlights how policy, procurement, and public controversy can quickly translate into consumer adoption in the AI market.

It also signals an emerging dynamic: AI leaders are increasingly being judged not only on model performance, but on alignment policies, governance stance, and national-security narratives — factors that can influence both enterprise buying behavior and public perception.
