According to executive, Panasonic needs four new EV battery factories

Panasonic and Subaru forge strategic EV battery partnership amidst global market surge.

According to a Friday article in the Nikkei newspaper, Panasonic Holdings and Subaru are set to reveal plans for a strategic electric vehicle (EV) battery alliance soon. Panasonic, a major EV battery supplier to Tesla, is expanding its global market share in the face of increased competition from Chinese and South Korean rivals. While no particular sources were cited, the story suggested that Subaru would consider adopting Tesla’s latest 4680 batteries, for which Panasonic’s energy unit is trying to increase production.

Panasonic Investigates New Growth Pathways in the EV Market

Panasonic’s present focus on selling EV batteries to Tesla has spurred the company to look for new development opportunities in the automobile industry. Panasonic hopes to enhance its position in the EV battery industry as Chinese and South Korean competitors gain pace, by working with Subaru, a major player in the North American market. Subaru, which is significantly reliant on sales in the region, has yet to comment on the proposed collaboration.

The timing of the announcement corresponds to earnings reports.

The announcement coincides with both companies’ first-quarter earnings reports, with Panasonic reporting on Monday and Subaru reporting on Wednesday. Notably, Panasonic’s energy division is also in discussions with Mazda Motor to form a battery supply relationship for EVs, demonstrating the company’s proactive attitude to collaborate in the electric mobility area.

Subaru Sets Its Sights on the EV Market

Subaru has set lofty goals for the electric car sector, aiming for global sales of 200,000 battery-powered vehicles per year by 2026. Subaru hopes to capitalize on the growing demand for electric vehicles and increase its footprint in the rapidly developing EV sector by creating a cooperation with Panasonic.
