What is Passkey?
Passkey is a technology developed by the FIDO Alliance, in collaboration with major companies such as Apple, Google and Microsoft. As a replacement for traditional passwords, passkey allows users to use secure authentication methods such as facial recognition or biometrics, eliminating the hassle of creating and typing passwords.
Expanding Passkey capabilities with iOS 17
With iOS 16, users were able to create and save passkeys through Safari and iCloud Keychain. Now, with iOS 17, this feature is being extended to third-party apps. This will allow iPhone users to use Face ID or Touch ID passkeys in apps like WhatsApp.
Enhanced security and ease of use from WhatsApp
Last November, WhatsApp rolled out an update that gave users the option to verify email instead of SMS. It is also developing the ability to set a username that can be shared instead of a phone number. WhatsApp is also working on a special app for iPad users. However, the passkey feature requires an iPhone with iOS 17 or later operating system.
