The investigation, launched in May, was prompted by 22 reports of Waymo’s robot taxis displaying potentially unsafe driving behaviors or other “unexpected behavior.” Among these incidents, 17 involved collisions.

The agency has asked Waymo to provide comprehensive details of all trips taken by its self-driving vehicles on public roads. This includes extensive data on the incidents reported, to determine whether these vehicles pose a risk to public safety.
Waymo is expected to respond to the NHTSA’s queries by August 6, providing insights that will be critical to the ongoing investigation. The agency’s goal is to ensure that the technology behind these autonomous vehicles meets the necessary safety standards and does not endanger users or other road users.
