Samsung Hires Former Apple Siri Leader to Head Its AI Division

Samsung has made a strategic move by hiring Murat Akbacak, formerly Apple’s Head of Speech and Contextual AI for Siri, to lead its artificial intelligence division. This new appointment is seen as a critical step for Samsung’s future AI strategy.

Strategic Appointment

Samsung introduced several innovative AI-powered features with the Galaxy S24 earlier this year, yet its digital assistant, Bixby, has struggled to gain significant traction. To revitalize Bixby and enhance its AI initiatives, Samsung has appointed Murat Akbacak to head its newly formed North American AI Center. According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, despite Akbacak stating he is still at Apple, Samsung is reportedly communicating internally about this new hire.

Murat Akbacak’s Background

At Apple, Akbacak played a crucial role in shaping Siri’s strategy, focusing on personalization and contextualization. He also advanced Apple’s conversational and multimodal AI, which improved Siri’s performance and user experience.

Implications for Samsung

Over recent years, Bixby has fallen behind competitors such as Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri. Samsung’s recruitment of Akbacak is seen as a promising move to rejuvenate Bixby and other AI initiatives. This appointment underscores Samsung’s commitment to strengthening its AI capabilities and competing more effectively in the tech industry.

Future AI Developments

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly important in the tech world, companies are taking aggressive steps to enhance their AI capabilities. Samsung expects Akbacak’s new team to help enhance Galaxy devices’ AI environment. This acquisition should boost Samsung’s standing in the competitive tech market, where AI drives innovation and user engagement.
