Apple warns of a device-wide security flaw

Apple has exposed major security flaws that have been “actively exploited” in iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

According to The Telegraph, the security hole uncovered by the tech corporation in two publications on Wednesday allows threat actors full admin access to the device.

Users should update the following models affected by the issue, according to experts:

Mac machines running macOS Monterey;
iPhone 6S and subsequent models;
various iPad models, including the fifth and subsequent generations;
every iPad Pro model;
The iPad Air 2.

According to Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security, successful access by hackers can result in the execution of “any code as if they are you, the user,” and users in the public spotlight, such as journalists or activists, should be especially alert to upgrades.

Experts believe that three operating system updates — iPad and iOS 15.6.1, as well as macOS 12.5.1  will resolve this issue.

During the company’s recent WWDC22 conference, Apple announced the global release of iOS 15.6.1 and macOS Monterey 12.5.1.

While Apple stated in its announcement that iOS 15.6.1 “provides essential security upgrades and is recommended for all users,” security researcher Will Strafach stated that technical investigation of the vulnerabilities addressed has yet to be completed.

The number of users affected by the security weakness is still unknown, but with endpoints — which are increasingly being targeted as a result of remote and hybrid working — being progressively targeted, organizations must be careful in keeping hardware updated with the latest updates.
