Awkward Moment for Google: Gemini AI Fails Twice During Live Demo

A Rough Start for Gemini AI

Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, had an embarrassing moment at the Made by Google event on August 13, 2024. During a live demonstration aimed at showcasing the assistant’s new features, Gemini failed not once, but twice, causing a bit of an awkward pause for the presenter, Dave Citron.

The Goal: Showcasing Gemini’s Capabilities

The goal was to demonstrate how Gemini integrates with Google Calendar, Tasks, and Keep on Android devices. Citron, with a smile, confidently stated, “All the demos we are doing today are live,” before proceeding to showcase Gemini’s capabilities. He took a photo of a poster featuring singer Sabrina Carpenter, held up by co-presenter Jess Carpenter, and asked Gemini to check his calendar for availability during Carpenter’s upcoming San Francisco show.

The Unexpected Failure

However, instead of smoothly executing the command, Gemini briefly loaded and then reset. Citron tried again, but the AI assistant faltered once more. With the audience likely holding their breath, Citron humorously quipped, “Let’s see the demo spirits are with us today.” On the third attempt, using a different device, Gemini finally managed to check Citron’s calendar and confirmed his availability, taking a full 20 seconds to inform him that his schedule was clear.

A Reminder of Technology’s Unpredictability

The incident highlighted the challenges and unpredictability of live technology demos, even for a tech giant like Google. While the third attempt was successful, the earlier failures did cast a shadow over the showcase, especially since the live demo was meant to emphasize the reliability and advanced capabilities of the new Gemini AI assistant.

Event Highlights and Aftermath

Despite this hiccup, the Made by Google event continued, with the company unveiling the new Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel Watch 3, and other exciting updates. Yet, the Gemini demo fail is sure to be remembered as a reminder that even cutting-edge technology can sometimes have off days.
