Big Deal: In a deal worth up to $744 million, the Chinese company Xpeng will purchase Didi’s smart EV division

Xpeng to Acquire Didi’s Smart EV Unit in $744 Million Deal

Hong Kong, August 28, 2023 – Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Xpeng has unveiled a significant strategic move, announcing its acquisition of Didi’s smart electric vehicle unit. The deal, valued at up to $744 million, marks a pivotal moment for the two companies.

Xpeng’s Shares Surge 13%

Following the announcement, Xpeng experienced a notable surge in its shares, reflecting the enthusiasm surrounding this strategic partnership.

The Birth of ‘Project MONA’

As part of this collaboration, Xpeng is set to introduce an A-class electric vehicle model in the next year, which will be launched under a new brand tentatively named ‘MONA.’ The primary aim of this venture is to broaden Xpeng’s presence in the mass-market EV segment. Notably, this new offering is anticipated to fall within the $20,000 price range.

Xpeng highlighted the significance of ‘Project MONA,’ stating, “This project will expedite the company’s production and sales growth, facilitating the achievement of greater economies of scale.”

Navigating Challenges in China’s EV Landscape

This strategic maneuver takes place against the backdrop of challenges within China’s EV industry, including a slowdown in demand and a surplus of manufacturing capacity. For companies like Didi, breaking into the market has proven daunting. Xiaomi, known for its smartphones, only recently gained regulatory approval for EV manufacturing after announcing plans two years prior.

Didi’s Ongoing Support

Didi emphasized its commitment to supporting Xpeng’s new endeavor by providing access to its mobility market. Additionally, the two firms are poised to explore various areas of strategic collaboration, spanning marketing, financial services, and insurance offerings.

Exploring Diverse Collaboration Frontiers

The partnership’s scope extends beyond conventional EV manufacturing. Xpeng and Didi are considering collaboration avenues in charging infrastructure, the development of robotaxis, and the joint pursuit of international markets. Notably, Didi has been actively working with Chinese automakers to pioneer the concept of robotaxis, with a target to deploy them by 2025.

Stake Acquisition and Potential Milestones

Crucially, Didi will acquire approximately 3.25% of Xpeng’s shares under this agreement, with the potential for an increase contingent upon the attainment of production and sales milestones. The comprehensive deal value, which could reach $744 million, encompasses possible milestone payments, underlining the significance of the collaboration for both parties.

Xpeng’s bold move in acquiring Didi’s smart EV unit signals its intent to strengthen its presence in the rapidly evolving Chinese EV landscape, leveraging Didi’s expertise and extensive mobility network.
