Corning has announced the introduction of Gorilla Glass 7i, a more durable glass designed specifically for mid-range and affordable smartphones. Oppo will be the first company to release a phone equipped with this new glass.
Background and Development
Four years ago, Corning introduced the 7th generation of Gorilla Glass, named Victus, which was primarily designed for high-end devices. However, as the technology evolved, Victus began appearing in mid-range phones as well. To address the needs of value and mid-range devices, Corning has now developed Gorilla Glass 7i.
Why Corning Gorilla Glass 7i?
The “7i” designation signifies “industry-leading innovation for midrange devices,” reflecting its 7th generation lineage similar to Victus. This new glass aims to provide the durability and scratch resistance needed for modern mid-range phones, which often feature high-quality displays such as 10-bit and even 12-bit OLED panels.
Durability and Performance
Corning claims that Gorilla Glass 7i can withstand a 1-meter (3.3 feet) drop onto hard surfaces like asphalt, which is twice as resistant to scratches as competing glass products. This makes it a suitable option for phones at various price points, as well as for other devices like smartwatches that require durable glass.
Market Necessity
Many current devices still use older versions of Gorilla Glass, such as Gorilla Glass 5 and even Gorilla Glass 3. The need for a more modern, cost-effective option that bridges the gap between GG5 and Victus has become apparent. Gorilla Glass 7i addresses this need, offering a balance of durability, cost, and suitability for the latest display technologies.
First Adopter: Oppo
Oppo will be the first company to launch a phone with Gorilla Glass 7i. More details about this collaboration and the new device will shared by Oppo soon. The introduction of 7i is expected to set a new standard for durability in mid-range smartphones and other electronic devices.
