Teams Spatial Audio will help users more easily track which person is speaking in audio conferences.
Microsoft is introducing spatial audio for its Teams desktop app on Windows and macOS platforms in an effort to improve the virtual conference experience. Microsoft hopes to transform audio conferencing by generating a more immersive and natural feeling of communication, taking lessons from Apple’s successful deployment of spatial audio in FaceTime.
Using Spatial Audio to Improve Communication
The Spatial Audio feature in Teams makes use of the concept of spatial perception, allowing users to experience sounds as coming from different positions on the screen. This advancement allows for a more intuitive grasp of who is speaking during audio conferences, even when numerous people are participating in the discussion. Spatial audio supports dynamic speaker tracking by mimicking a larger acoustic landscape, making it easier for participants to follow conversations in multi-person calls.
LE Audio Integration: A Look Into the Future
While spatial audio support is not currently accessible on Bluetooth headsets, the incorporation of Low Energy Audio (LE Audio) technology is poised to expand spatial audio support to wireless headsets. Although it is still in its early phases, LE Audio is already being adopted by a number of OEMs. Several prominent earbud brands, including Samsung, Sony, OnePlus, and EarFun, have incorporated spatial audio compatibility, enhancing Teams users’ aural experience. Furthermore, with Bluetooth LE support in Windows 11, seamless compatibility with wireless devices is on the future.
Towards Better Compatibility
It’s worth noting that Microsoft’s proprietary Bluetooth products, such as the Surface Earbuds and Surface Headphones 2, do not yet support LE Audio. As a result, these devices are currently deprived of the benefits of Teams’ spatial audio capability. Unlike Apple’s ecosystem advantage, which allows for seamless integration between products, Microsoft’s spatial audio experience is dependent on compatible earphones to reach its full potential.
As the technological environment evolves, the addition of spatial audio to Microsoft Teams is an important step in bridging the gap between real and virtual interactions. Users can expect a more immersive and cohesive auditory experience in the world of virtual conferencing as LE Audio compatibility advances.
