Google: AI on Phones Needs Lots of RAM!

Google wants some AI features, such as smart replies, to be “persistent in RAM”.

Tech giant Google has announced that running AI models natively on smartphones requires a high amount of RAM. This is especially true for the Pixel 8 series. So what does this mean?

According to Google’s VP Seang Chau in a podcast, the Pixel 8 Pro with 12 GB of RAM is the perfect platform to install Gemini Nano and explore its possibilities. However, on the standard Pixel 8 with 8 GB of RAM, running the AI model was avoided so as not to disrupt the user experience.

Opening new doors for developers

In a recent announcement, Google revealed that it will offer the Gemini Nano as a developer option to Pixel 8 users. While this is good news for developers, it may not make much sense for the average Pixel 8 user.

Google wants some AI features, such as intelligent responses, to be “persistent in RAM”. This will ensure that they are always ready to use and allow for immediate reactions. However, this could slow down the performance of other apps and cause you to “permanently” lose some system memory.
