Alan Fan, Huawei Technologies’ head of intellectual property (IP), disclosed $560 million in royalty revenues in 2022 in a recent lecture at the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen. Fan ascribed this advantage to lower payments made to other IP holders as a result of a two-year reduction in device sales.
Huawei has signed intellectual licensing deals with well-known smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung and Oppo, as well as luxury automobiles such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Subaru, Lamborghini, and Bentley.
The company’s strong commitment to R&D is clear, with an incredible $23 billion spent in this area in the previous year. Huawei’s research section, which employs around 114,000 people, accounts for 55% of the company’s total workforce.
Since 2019, Huawei has experienced constraints in obtaining chipmaking technologies as a result of numerous rounds of US prohibitions stemming from security concerns about the business. Huawei, on the other hand, vigorously denies these allegations and says that it does not represent a security risk.
