At CES 2024, Hyundai introduced the S-A2 air taxi concept, an electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) vehicle, following the 2020 debut of the S-A1 model. Designed for urban transportation, this vehicle aims to provide fast transit from point A to B without traffic constraints.
The S-A2 can reach speeds of 120 miles per hour at an altitude of 1,500 feet, and it’s designed for short distances between 25 to 40 miles. Equipped with eight rotors and an electric propulsion architecture, the vehicle operates quietly, comparable to the sound of a dishwasher. It features seating for a pilot and four passengers, with lighting to indicate entry and exit points. For safety, many components like the propulsion system and flight controls are redundantly designed to function in case of primary component failure.
Supernal, Hyundai’s air mobility company, aims to achieve commercial aviation safety levels and enter the market by 2028 with this eVTOL vehicle. Leveraging Hyundai’s mass production capabilities, the company plans to manufacture eVTOL vehicles cost-effectively.
This innovative air taxi has the potential to transform urban transportation. Hyundai’s expertise in technology and innovation could lead to a significant shift in urban mobility if the S-A2 is successfully launched in the market.
