Decision of Microsoft to enhance security comes in the wake of state-sponsored hacker attacks.
Microsoft has announced a new policy for its employees in China: starting in September, only iPhones will be allowed in the workplace. This decision, part of Microsoft’s Global Secure Future Initiative, requires all employees to use Microsoft Authenticator and Identity Pass applications.
Reasons Behind the Decision
One significant reason for this mandate is the absence of Google Play Store in China. Local manufacturers like Huawei and Xiaomi rely on their platforms, which lack certain security features Microsoft deems necessary. Consequently, Microsoft has decided to restrict corporate access from these devices.
Implementation Plan
Employees using Huawei or Xiaomi Android devices will be provided with an iPhone 15. These devices can be collected from various centers in China, including Hong Kong. While Microsoft has not officially commented on the reasons behind this decision, it coincides with a sensitive period for iPhone usage in China.
Security Concerns
Microsoft’s move to enhance security measures follows several state-sponsored cyberattacks. Notably, a Russian hack disclosed in January affected multiple US government agencies, including the State Department. Under the Secure Future Initiative, Microsoft aims to address cloud security vulnerabilities swiftly, make identity theft more difficult, and implement automatic multi-factor authentication for employees.
