Recent research conducted by NASA using the Hubble Space Telescope points to an unexpected situation in the universe: significant differences between the expansion rates of the universe immediately after the Big Bang and now. This discrepancy, which scientists have yet to explain, suggests that something unusual is happening in the universe, possibly due to undiscovered new laws of physics.
The Hubble Telescope has been collecting data on “space-time milestones” for 30 years to monitor the universe’s expansion rate. NASA has calibrated over 40 milestones, providing greater precision in measurements of the universe’s expansion rate than previous studies. Nobel Laureate Adam Riess announced that this data offers the most accurate measurement of the universe’s expansion rate and includes a new research paper presenting the largest and possibly final major update from Hubble.
Astronomers discovered that the universe is expanding faster than models predicted. While the expected speed is approximately 67.5 kilometers per second per megaparsec, measurements suggest a speed closer to 73. This indicates that the universe’s growth and expansion are more complex than previously understood and that there’s more to discover about how the cosmos is changing.
Scientists plan to use the newly launched James Webb Space Telescope to further investigate this challenge. This telescope will allow them to observe more distant and higher-resolution milestones.
