Meta is opening up Horizon OS, the operating system for its Quest headsets, to third-party hardware manufacturers. Furthermore, this strategic move comes as Meta, Apple, and Sony are fighting over VR and AR headsets.
Asus, Lenovo and Microsoft’s Xbox were the first to respond, confirming that they will develop new devices running this software. Specifically, Microsoft announced that they will collaborate with Meta to build a “limited edition Meta Quest inspired by Xbox”. On the other hand, Asus is developing a headset for gaming, while Lenovo is designing its device for “productivity, learning and entertainment”.
“These new products will likely take a few years to launch, but we’re excited to start this new chapter and bring it to you as soon as possible”. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a video shared on Instagram.
Meta is switching from hardware to software to generate additional revenue. Allowing third-party devices may grow the market. Meta’s Horizon OS mixes mixed reality technologies with social presence. To conclude, Meta’s decision may boost VR and AR gadget launches and industry rivalry.
