OpenAI is reportedly exploring the possibility of developing its own artificial intelligence (AI) chips and has considered potential acquisition targets in response to a shortage of expensive AI chips, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans. While OpenAI has not made a final decision, it has been discussing ways to address the chip shortage, including building its own AI chips, collaborating more closely with chipmaker Nvidia, and diversifying its suppliers.
CEO Sam Altman has identified increasing access to AI chips as a key priority for OpenAI. He has expressed concerns about the limited availability of graphics processing units (GPUs), which are crucial for AI applications and are predominantly controlled by Nvidia. OpenAI has been relying on a supercomputer with 10,000 Nvidia GPUs provided by Microsoft to develop its generative AI technologies.
