Qualcomm and Apple Extend 5G Chip Agreement Until 2026
Qualcomm and Apple have agreed to prolong the availability of 5G chips until at least 2026. This partnership, announced on Monday, represents the continuation of the two tech titans’ multibillion-dollar connection. The extension comes as Apple faces increasing hurdles in China and attempts to strengthen its supply chain in other countries.
A Long-Term Collaboration
The new agreement extends Qualcomm’s involvement as an Apple chip supplier for at least three years beyond early estimates. Despite its recent shift toward creating its own processing circuits for computers, this extension shows that Apple has no immediate plans to hurry the development of its own modem.
Market Reaction
Qualcomm shares rose 4% in early afternoon trade on the announcement. Qualcomm is a leading manufacturer of modem chips that allow phones to communicate with mobile data networks. Apple’s stock, on the other hand, rose 0.5%.
Collaboration in the Past
Qualcomm and Apple had already settled a lengthy legal dispute in 2019, which resulted in their initial chip supply arrangement. This original supply agreement, which expires this year, included iPhone production. The iPhones scheduled for release on Tuesday are believed to be the last models launched under this arrangement.
Collaboration to be Continued
Qualcomm will continue to supply Apple with semiconductors for iPhones set for release each year through 2026, according to the recently announced agreement. While the financial parameters of the agreement have not been released, Qualcomm has claimed that they are “similar” to those of their previous agreement.
Apple has yet to provide a formal statement on the matter. Qualcomm sold around $7.26 billion in semiconductors to Apple in 2022, according to UBS analysts in August 2023.
This expanded cooperation between Qualcomm and Apple highlights the two companies’ continued collaboration and shared commitment to delivering cutting-edge mobile technologies to consumers globally.
