At CES 2024, Samsung reintroduced Ballie, their robotic sphere, now updated with a fresh look and an integrated projector. Originally showcased in 2020 as a home assistant and potential fitness coach, Ballie’s initial abilities included functions like opening smart curtains and turning on the TV. It could also call for help if it detected a person falling.
Four years later, Ballie appears to have evolved significantly. It’s now described as “bowling ball-sized” and features a spatial LiDAR sensor and a 1080p projector. This dual-lens projector enables Ballie to project content like films, video calls, and greetings onto surfaces around it. In a demonstration video, Ballie was seen projecting the word “Welcome” as a user returned home, displaying a conference call, an exercise video, and content from a nearby PC as a secondary screen. In a playful scenario, Ballie also projected videos of greenery to entertain a golden retriever.
Samsung demonstrated that users could control Ballie through voice commands and text messages. It responded by sending clips of what it observed, like the activities of a pet left at home. The new model can automatically turn connected lights and devices on and off and control unconnected devices with its infrared transmitter.
The release of Ballie is expected within 2024, but Samsung has not yet shared pricing or other details. This product represents an intriguing evolution from a cute concept to a potential prototype and possibly a purchasable product soon. This live update from CES 2024 in Las Vegas keeps us abreast of the latest developments in the tech world.
