The best-selling phones continue to be a subject of curiosity from time to time. According to Omdia’s Smartphone Model Market Tracker, the best-selling smartphone in the world in the first half of 2023 was the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which was sold in the price range of $1,099 to $1,599. Just behind Apple’s most expensive phone was the iPhone 14 Pro, priced between $999 and $1,499. Omdia reported that Apple shipped 26.5 million iPhone 14 Pro Maxes in the first half of 2023. It also noted that 21 million iPhone 14 Pro units were delivered during the same period.
Interestingly, in the first half of 2022, the base iPhone 13, priced between $799 and $1,099, was the best-selling phone shipped by Apple with 33.7 million units worldwide. Additionally, last year the iPhone 13 Pro Max came in second place with 23 million units in transit in the first half of 2022. In the first half of 2023, two iPhone models and one Samsung Galaxy device rounded out the top five.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 came in third and fourth with sales of 16.5 million and 15.5 million units respectively. One of the non-iOS models in this year’s top five, the mid-range Galaxy A14, sold 12.4 million units worldwide in the first half of 2023. The low price tag, triple camera setup (including a 50MP primary) and hefty 5000mAh battery are some of the points of interest.
In fact, the Galaxy A14 coming in fifth place wasn’t as surprising as you might think. Last year, the Galaxy A13 ranked 3rd among the best-selling phones by the halfway point of 2022 with 16.2 million units shipped.

Apple and Samsung are the best-selling phone brands!
After the Galaxy A14, all four models ranked number six through nine on the list were Samsung phones. In sixth place was the Galaxy S23 Ultra worldwide in the first six months of the year. The Galaxy S23 Ultra sold 9.6 million units. Last year’s Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G also ranked sixth at the midpoint of 2022 after 9.8 million units were delivered. The Galaxy A14 5G ranked seventh with 9 million cell phones delivered worldwide.
In eighth place was the Galaxy A54 5G (8.8 million units shipped globally). In ninth place was the Galaxy A34 5G with 7.1 million phones shipped. Finally, the iPhone 11 ranked 10th among the top 10 smartphones shipped worldwide in the first half of 2023.
This year, the list was dominated by Apple and Samsung. In the first half of 2022, Xiaomi’s several Redmi phones ranked ninth and tenth, respectively. Jusy Hong, Senior Research Manager at Omdia, also said: “Android-based smartphone shipments… will inevitably see negative growth once again this year. On the other hand, Apple’s Pro and Pro Max shipments will increase due to strong demand”.
