The largest cloud computing company in the world, Amazon Web Services (AMZN), is thinking about utilizing new AMD artificial intelligence CPUs. In response to competitor Nvidia Corp.’s dominance in the AI sector, the chip manufacturer laid out its approach. Lisa Su, the CEO of AMD, revealed a strategy to win over significant cloud computing clients by providing a menu of all the components required to construct the sorts of systems to power services such as ChatGPT, but allowing users pick and choose whatever they want, utilizing industry standard connections. Although Dave Brown, vice president of elastic compute cloud at Amazon, stated that AWS is exploring using AMD’s new MI300 processors in its cloud services, AWS has not made any public commitments to do so. Nvidia is also asking cloud providers if they are willing to offer an entire system designed by Nvidia in a product called DGX Cloud.
Due to the company’s extensive experience in producing dependable servers and current supply chain skills, AWS declined to collaborate with Nvidia on the DGX Cloud service. AWS favors building all of its servers from the ground up. The fact that Amazon is investigating AMD’s MI300 shows that tech companies are eager to diversify the hardware they use for AI development, which may open up new business prospects for other chipmakers in the future.
