In order to strengthen regulation of businesses like TikTok, a well-known social media platform, Indonesia is planning to put limitations on imported items on online marketplaces. Under the new regulations, imports of items under $100 would be restricted, and online marketplaces may also be required to get licenses and pay taxes, much like small businesses. This might shield local Indonesian firms by preventing companies like TikTok from directly selling cheap Chinese items on their platforms. Just one month after the business launched its investment in the area, Indonesia may become the first nation in Southeast Asia to reject TikTok’s expanding e-commerce footprint if the legislation is implemented. With its $20 billion retail plan, TikTok, which has over 100 million monthly users in Indonesia, poses a danger to Amazon.
