Virtual reality (VR) may help train nurses outside of inpatient clinics, according to new research.
An immersive VR simulation training program that potentially replace pediatric clinical practice was tested. After one control group received normal inpatient clinical training and one intervention group completed virtual VR training, all students took an in-person simulation test to compare performance.
VR training improved nursing students’ infection control, initial assessment, and oxygen therapy scores.
The VR group had higher total performance scores than the clinically trained students, although medicine administration, focused assessments, and patient evaluations were similar.
The Science Direct project sought new ways to increase nursing school enrollments in response to pandemic-related nursing shortages.
