WhatsApp has introduced a new feature for creating groups. As we know, WhatsApp groups have been around for a long time and the feature is quite simple. It’s a common room with several members who can share text messages, photos, voice notes and videos. Over the years, WhatsApp groups have received several improvements, including an increased member limit and end-to-end encryption. But the requirement to use and create groups remains the same. Now the Meta-owned messaging platform is changing one of these basic requirements – naming the group. This means that you can now create a WhatsApp group without actually giving it a name.
In a post on Facebook, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained the reason for the update. He stated that WhatsApp aims to make it simpler to use. The post reads as follows: “We’re making it easier to start WhatsApp groups by naming them based on who’s in the chat when you don’t want to come up with another name.” If you don’t choose a name, it appears that the notification pop-up will only share members’ names.
The feature will roll out worldwide in the next few weeks, the messaging company added in a press note. The press note reads: “Useful when you need to create a group in a hurry or don’t have a group topic in mind. Anonymous groups of up to six participants will now be dynamically named based on who is in the group. The situation is similar for groups created with privacy in mind. It will be displayed differently for each participant depending on how they have contacts saved on their phone. If you are added to a group of people who have not registered your contact, your phone number will appear in the group name.”
The new update comes after WhatsApp announced the ability to allow users to send HD quality photos in personal or group chats. However, users will need to select the quality of the photo before sending it, as the default setting is set to SD (standard definition). WhatsApp group creation (anonymous) is also slowly rolling out to users worldwide. We recommend that app users keep the app updated so that they can enjoy the latest updates.
