When users create a new WordPress-powered website, they are typically greeted by a preset introduction post named “Hello world!”
But now it’s time for WordPress to say good-by. Specifically, Twitter is being phased out.
WordPress.com is the latest big platform or organization to discontinue Twitter integrations as a result of Elon Musk’s new high-priced API membership options.
Under Musk’s leadership, Twitter has discontinued its free API services to developers wishing to create Twitter-based apps or integrations. Instead, earlier this year, the company announced exorbitantly priced paid Enterprise subscription tiers starting at $42,000 per month.
According to a statement issued by WordPress.com’s parent company Automattic, the platform is eliminating Twitter from Jetpack, the business’s official WordPress plugin. Among its many security and marketing features, Jetpack Social allows users to automatically post content from their WordPress sites to a variety of social media channels.
WordPress.com’s statement, titled “The End of Twitter Auto-Sharing(opens in a new tab),” makes it clear that Twitter’s withdrawal from Jetpack is related to the API price increase.
“Twitter decided, on short notice, to dramatically change the terms and pricing of the Twitter API,” Automattic explained in a statement. “We attempted to negotiate new terms with Twitter in good faith, but we were unable to reach an agreement.” As a result, the Twitter link in Jetpack Social will no longer function, and your blog entries will no longer be automatically published to Twitter.”
The firm has stated unequivocally that this will only effect Twitter. WordPress users will still be able to use Jetpack’s social features, as they did previously with sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Tumblr, according to Automattic. Furthermore, the company stated that Instagram and decentralized Twitter competitor Mastodon will be added to Jetpack Social in the “near future.”
Automattic joins the ranks of other prominent corporations that have removed Twitter in recent weeks. Microsoft recently deleted Twitter from its Microsoft Ads service and Xbox game system, while Intercom, a popular customer support network, also eliminated Musk’s site.
