Gmail’s HTML version is being discontinued

Gmail’s HTML version is being discontinued

With this change, users will automatically switch to Gmail’s standard view.

Google has announced that it will remove Gmail’s HTML view in January 2024. The basic HTML view offered an optimized experience for users with slow internet connections or older browsers. However, this feature will be unavailable from 2024.

What did the HTML view offer users?

The basic HTML view allowed users to quickly view and send emails without waiting for Gmail to load. There is no clear explanation as to why Google is removing this feature. “Gmail Basic HTML views are older versions of Gmail that were replaced over 10 years ago and do not include the full Gmail feature functionality,” the company said in a statement.

While the reason behind this decision is not fully understood, we can relate Google’s need to offer full functionality in a “basic” option to security. In the standard view, users will be able to benefit from the latest security measures and features. With this change, users will automatically switch to the standard view of Gmail.

Google also shared that it recently tested emoji reactions in Gmail, will protect sensitive Gmail settings with multi-factor ID, and that users of the Gmail iOS or Android apps can use Google Translate to read emails written in other languages. These changes continue to shape the Gmail experience for users.
