Ransomed.vc announced that it would publish the illegally obtained data on September 28.
Tech giant Sony has allegedly been the target of a dangerous ransomware attack. A new ransomware group called Ransomed.vc has announced that Sony is among its many victims.
Ransomed.vc is a relatively new group that has been active since September, but has already targeted several victims, including Sony. The ransomware group said in a statement that it had compromised all Sony systems and planned to sell the data rather than demand a ransom for it.
While the group has shared some data to confirm the signs of the hack, at first glance the information is not very impressive. There are screenshots of the internal login page, a PowerPoint presentation with test bank details and various Java files.
Data will be published if not sold
Ransomed.vc also shared a file tree of the leaked data. However, it is observed that this file tree is too small for “all Sony systems“. The data, which is said to be under 6000 files so far, includes “build log files“, a large Java source and HTML files. Notably, many of the sample files contain Japanese characters.
Ransomed.vc did not specify the price of the data, but provided contact information for the Tox messaging service, Telegram and email details. In response to the allegations, Sony said they are currently investigating the situation. However, Ransomed.vc said it will release the illegally obtained data on September 28.
Ransomed.vc is using the threat of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to convince companies to pay a ransom. This tactic is intended to make companies think that paying now is a more economical option than potentially higher fines in the future.
