This deal represents Amazon’s largest known investment in AWS.
Amazon has announced plans to invest $4 billion in AI startup Anthropic. Anthropic is home to Claude, one of the best-known AI chatbots, and its founders, Dario and Daniela Amodei, previously worked at OpenAI.
While this investment is small compared to OpenAI, where Microsoft has so far invested $13 billion, it is an important step to increase Amazon’s influence in the AI space. Anthropic’s Claude and Claude 2, large language model-based chatbots, are similar to models like ChatGPT and Bard in translating text, writing code and answering various questions.
Secure AI chatbots
Anthropic claims to be safer thanks to its ability to revise its own responses without being dependent on human moderators. As part of this investment, Amazon aims to integrate Anthropic’s technology into its own product range and use it to build AI applications. In addition, Amazon will use its custom chips to build and deploy future AI models.
The other big player investing in Anthropic: Google
Google is another major tech company that has shown interest in Anthropic. The company has made a significant investment in Anthropic, taking a stake of around 10%. Despite the Amazon partnership, Anthropic plans to offer its technology through Google Cloud.
This deal also represents Amazon’s largest known investment in AWS. With a total investment of $4 billion, the company aims to significantly increase its influence in artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
