Before releasing the foldable iPad, Apple is working to make the screen curve unnoticeable.
Apple is preparing to launch its first foldable iPad. This iPad will be very different from the 8.3 to 12.9-inch tablets you can buy today. The screen size of this innovative device is not yet clear, but Apple’s goal is to prepare the industry for a foldable iPhone that will be the Galaxy Z Fold’s biggest competitor.
The first foldable iPad is said to be “intensively developed“. Contrary to what Ming-Chi Kuo predicted last year, production of this iPad could start “by the end of 2024“. But that doesn’t mean we should get too excited, as this new report, based on “supply chain sources”, also suggests that the official announcement of this device could take place in “early 2025“. If this is true, the launch of the foldable iPad will be pushed back to 2025, thus fulfilling Kuo’s prophecy.
Apple is also rumored to be partnering with LG instead of Samsung for its first foldable project. This collaboration has been rumored several times before, but today the Korean publication TheElec further strengthened this speculation. The details are still very vague, however, as it’s not clear when this device will be released. Apple, together with LG, is developing an “ultra-thin glass-coated foldable OLED panel for tablets and laptops”. Based on this description, there’s no telling whether Apple will first use this panel for a foldable iPad or a foldable MacBook.
Before Apple releases the foldable iPad, it’s working to make the screen curve unnoticeable. This could be a feature that would put the design of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to shame. But even if the foldable iPad is announced at the end of 2024 and released in early 2025, it’s not realistic to think that the screen curve will disappear completely. That’s because panel makers haven’t yet found a complete solution to this problem, and it’s unlikely to change in the next year or so.
What about an iPhone Fold? Before answering this question, we should note that the name iPad Fold is completely made up and should not be taken too seriously. Likewise, we will continue to use the iPhone Fold name for simplicity. But the iPhone Fold is more mysterious and more uncertain than the iPad Fold in terms of its design, features and release timing. If the iPad Fold launches before 2025 and is successful, Apple could enter the foldable phone market as early as 2026.
