Google is planning an AI-focused restructuring, potentially leading to a major reorganization within its 30,000-person advertising sales unit. Following the company’s recent layoffs of over 12,000 employees, this move has raised concerns about potential job losses. It has been automating the ad creation process with AI-powered tools in recent years, significantly contributing to its annual revenue. The efficiency of these tools and the reduced need for employees are resulting in higher profit margins.
According to a report by “The Information,” advancements in AI could lead to the reassignment of employees in Google’s customer sales unit, which is responsible for managing relationships with major advertisers. A decision to automate certain roles in the Google Ads division was announced at a company-wide meeting.
In May, announced a “new era of AI-powered ads” in Google Ads, offering a natural language-based conversation experience. This initiative involves AI scanning websites and automatically producing keywords, headlines, descriptions, images, and other assets. Notably, an AI-powered ad tool called Performance Max (PMax) has been gaining attention for its advancements. PMax assists advertisers in determining optimal ad placements across Google Ads channels and automatically generates ad content by scanning websites. This dynamic AI approach continuously remixes ads in real-time, optimizing performance.
The anticipated restructuring is expected to significantly impact the workforce in the advertising division, which had about 13,500 people dedicated to sales last year. Official announcements regarding the scope and details of the restructuring are expected to be made in the coming month.
