NASA’s Kepler mission has discovered a planet orbiting the star KOI-3010, possessing characteristics similar to Earth. KOI-3010 is located in the constellation Lyra and is situated 1,213 light-years away from Earth. This ancient star is estimated to be 13.9 billion years old. The newly discovered planet by Kepler is named KOI-3010.01 (or KOI-3010 b) and is classified as a warm super-Earth. This planet has a greater mass than Earth but is much smaller than the gas giants. It takes approximately 60 Earth days to complete one orbit around its star.
The planet exhibits environmental factors that could influence the origin and evolution of life. Its average temperature is 19.6 degrees Celsius, and its radius is about 1.35 times that of Earth. While little is known about its atmospheric composition, it is assumed that an atmosphere exists, and it is nearly similar to Earth’s. The mass of the planet has not yet been determined. Researchers believe that this exoplanet will not only have a temperate climate similar to Earth’s but also possess a liquid ocean covering about 65% of its surface.
The chemical composition of exoplanets is thought to closely match that of Earth. Notably, this planet is located in the habitable zone, and its Earth Similarity Index is 0.84 (maximum – 1). Consequently, researchers consider the likelihood of this planet harboring life to be high.
