NASA showed the samples at a press conference at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Washington, D.C.
NASA has shown samples from the asteroid Bennu, brought to Earth by the Osiris-Rex spacecraft, to the public for the first time. These samples are the first asteroid samples brought to Earth.
How were the samples taken?
Osiris-Rex reached the asteroid Bennu in 2016 and carried out the first sampling in 2020. The spacecraft collected a total of 2.5 kilograms of samples. The samples were returned to Earth in September 2023.
Where were the samples taken from?
Osiris-Rex sampled the surface of asteroid Bennu from a depth of about 10 meters. These samples will provide important information about the asteroid’s internal structure and formation.

NASA showed the samples at a press conference at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Washington, D.C. The meeting was attended by NASA officials and scientists.
The samples will be analyzed in a laboratory at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The laboratory will analyze the chemical composition, mineral content and radioactive activity of the samples.
The importance of the samples
The asteroid Bennu is an asteroid close to Earth. Therefore, samples from Bennu will provide important information about Earth’s past and future. The samples will also provide information about the composition and structure of asteroids that could hit Earth.
The Bennu asteroid samples brought to Earth by NASA’s Osiris-Rex spacecraft will provide important information about the formation of asteroids and Earth’s past. These samples are also an important milestone for space exploration.
The Bennu asteroid is a carbon-rich asteroid. Therefore, it is thought that water and organic compounds may be present on the asteroid’s surface.
