According to a new benchmarking report from Tesla, the solar power system with Powerwall is allegedly cheaper than a conventional backup generator. According to Tesla, the Powerwall, when paired with solar power, reduces the user’s monthly electricity bill. Over a ten-year period, these savings could make the Powerwall and solar system more cost-effective than a generator. According to Tesla, when the savings on the electricity bill are taken into account, users could save about $20 per month, and the system could cost up to 20% less in total over ten years.

Powerwall has many advantages over standby generators. These include the ability to switch to backup power in less than a second without interruption, running on electricity stored from solar panels or the grid, quieter operation, indoor or outdoor installation options and minimal maintenance requirements. In addition, Powerwall users have the opportunity to earn additional income by participating in Virtual Power Plants. Powerwall’s warranty is 10 years, while traditional generators usually have a 5-year warranty.
In comparison, a generator can be cheaper in terms of direct cost. The starting price of a single Tesla Powerwall is $8,400, while a 10 kW generator costs around $2,000. But by adding a solar system, despite the initial cost, there are significant savings on the electricity bill and backup power is provided.
