Even Microsoft is surprised: CEO crisis deepens at OpenAI!

Microsoft became aware of Altman’s dismissal only a minute before it was made public.

Former CEO and OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman is reportedly in talks to return to the company just one day after being ousted by the company’s board of directors. The Verge and the Wall Street Journal report that Altman is undecided about a return and has told investors that he wants to completely restructure the board.

According to tech reporter Kara Swisher, OpenAI is offering the former CEO a return because it realizes the board is incompetent. Altman’s ouster took the tech industry by surprise as he was not always open in his communication with the company and the board lost faith in his ability to lead the company. Former Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati has been appointed interim CEO.

Microsoft became aware of Altman’s dismissal only a minute before it was made public. Microsoft is OpenAI’s strongest partner and provides financial support to the company.

Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s chief scientist and co-founder, sits on the board and reportedly played a key role in Altman’s dismissal. Shortly after Altman was ousted, the company’s president and other co-founder Greg Brockman resigned. A number of senior researchers also resigned on Friday.

Meanwhile, Altman is reportedly planning a new AI venture that has attracted investor interest. Altman and Brockman said they were surprised and saddened by the events, issuing a joint statement saying, “We’ll be fine, bigger things are coming soon.”
