The stolen data is said to have targeted ASML’s chip machine repository, which contains advanced machine details.
Netherlands-based semiconductor manufacturer ASML is on the agenda with allegations that a former employee stole company secrets and then started working at Huawei. ASML had confirmed the data theft in its 2022 annual report, and now it is alleged that this information was shared with Huawei.
Alleged data theft
NRC, a Netherlands-based newspaper, claims that after leaving ASML, the former employee went to work for Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant sanctioned by the US. Bloomberg also reports that the stolen data targeted ASML’s chip machine warehouse, which contained advanced machine details.
ASML has asked the Dutch intelligence service for help in vetting the new employees, but it is not known how the intelligence service responded to the request.
ASML CEO Peter Wennink described the data theft as “a piece of a puzzle that you haven’t unboxed,” but did not disclose the nature of the stolen data. The company said it has reported the breach to the relevant authorities and is taking corrective measures. It also does not expect this breach to have a material impact on its business.
Huawei and chip technology access
Huawei has recently been experiencing major knowledge shortages due to US sanctions. Therefore, the company is trying to overcome the problems by hiring talented people who can serve its interests. It is known that it has recently continued its recruitment in Russia and Taiwan.
