Volkswagen, well-known car manufacturer, announced plans to integrate ChatGPT into its vehicles as part of its 2024 CES announcements. This innovation will bring together Volkswagen’s existing IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT and will be used in various new model vehicles. Volkswagen is not the first in this field; Mercedes-Benz had previously announced ChatGPT integration in June. This integration is becoming an increasingly common trend in the automotive industry.
The company stated that ChatGPT will be enabled in specific models. These include the latest generation of infotainment systems in the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the new Tiguan, the new Passat, and the new Golf models. ChatGPT will be offered as a “standard feature” in many production vehicles from the second quarter of 2024. However, no definitive information was provided on which regions this feature would be available, and it was stated to be currently considered only for the U.S. market.
The integration of ChatGPT aims to enhance the existing capabilities of Volkswagen’s voice assistant and offer new conversational skills. Volkswagen’s voice assistant can already control the infotainment system, navigation, climate control, and other features. With the addition of ChatGPT, more intuitive, back-and-forth language interactions will become possible. Volkswagen notes that ChatGPT will provide enriched conversations, clarify questions, interact in intuitive language, and obtain information about the vehicle.
This technology will be integrated directly into the vehicle without any need for the driver to set up anything. Drivers will activate the voice assistant, and if the car’s standard system cannot adequately respond to the query, it will be sent anonymously to ChatGPT. Volkswagen emphasizes that ChatGPT does not receive any information about the vehicle and that the responses to questions are immediately deleted.
Although there were initial doubts about how this integration would work in practice, if ChatGPT can better understand and respond to queries important while driving, it is considered worth trying this technology. Company did not specify whether it would present any demos of this new technology at this year’s CES but stated they would explore opportunities to experience this technology.
