CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2024, one of the biggest events in the technology world, will take place in Las Vegas. As in previous years, CES 2024 will showcase a wide array of innovative products and technologies. This event highlights the latest trends and future technologies in the industry.
Center of Innovative Technologies
CES 2024 will offer a vast spectrum of technology including virtual reality (VR) headsets, robots, smart home devices, and more. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the latest gadgets and interact with industry leaders. As usual, CES will be the hub for innovations shaping the future of the technology world.
The event takes place in the dynamic and glamorous setting of Las Vegas. The city’s famous “Strip” area and other iconic structures add energy to the fair. Las Vegas stands out as a venue that fully reflects the extraordinary and innovative spirit of CES.
Industry Interaction and Networking
CES 2024 provides a unique networking and collaboration opportunity for technology companies, investors, media, and consumers. The event allows participants to keep up with the latest developments in the industry and establish new business relationships.
In summary, CES 2024 will be an event that captures the pulse of the technology world, showcasing innovative products and services, with a focus on industry interaction and networking. It offers an unmissable experience for technology enthusiasts. Now, let’s take a look at what CES 2024 holds for us.
User-Friendly Solar Energy
CES 2024 is expected to be filled with consumer hardware-formatted clean energy technology. Solar panels, traditionally an area for professional installers, are gaining popularity in independent installations. A few years ago, this hardware targeted caravan users but has now become mainstream. Panels combined with batteries resembling inverters and air conditioning units attract attention quietly and fashionably. Most of these setups being plug-and-play, eliminating the need for professional involvement, is a plus.
There are several factors beyond a niche audience of people wanting to go off the grid. In many places outside the U.S., energy costs have dramatically risen, and it would be foolish to think it won’t happen here. Places like Texas have seen their electric grids fail disastrously. A significant market is expected in the coming years, with more consumer brands in the home battery world likely to follow Anker and Jackery.
MEMS Earphones
Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) could be the next big advancement in earphones. California-based company xMEMS was the first to market solid-state components, and the first real wireless earphones using them have recently hit the market.
Benefits of MEMS drivers include improved response, better durability, and more consistent fidelity. They do not require the calibration or matching needed in the production line of balanced armature or dynamic drivers. The downside is that they still need a secondary driver for bass in their current state. However, xMEMS’ next-generation MEMS speaker promises 40 times higher bass response.
The new model, Cypress, will be introduced to attendees at CES. xMEMS claims its performance is consistent with the best 10-12 coiled speakers currently used in earphones. Moreover, Cypress could enhance ANC performance, covering higher frequencies, including crying babies. The company states these components won’t be ready for mass production until late 2024, so consumer products are more than a year away.
Wi-Fi 7 Everywhere
While not the most exciting development, expect to see a range of new devices at CES 2024, from laptops to TVs and everything in between, all supporting Wi-Fi 7. The official Wi-Fi 7 specification is expected to be completed early in 2024, so device manufacturers are looking to jump ahead. Some advantages of Wi-Fi 7 include maximum speeds of up to 46 Gbps, double that provided by Wi-Fi 6/6E, and 320 MHz channel bandwidth offering twice the capacity compared to previous generations.
Another key feature is Multi-Link Operation (MLO), allowing Wi-Fi 7 devices to use two bands simultaneously, effectively turning a single wireless connection into a two-lane highway. For people with larger homes, this will enhance mesh network performance, allowing devices to switch bands without losing speed or connection. Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) also sees a significant jump, from 1024-QAM in Wi-Fi 6/6E to 4096-QAM with Wi-Fi 7, allowing devices to pack more information into the same carrier signal.
The downside is that even though some devices like the Samsung Galaxy S23 already support Wi-Fi 7, you’ll need both a compatible device and router (not to mention a fast enough internet connection) to take advantage of all the spec’s capabilities. In short, keep an eye out for new devices running Wi-Fi 7, but don’t rush to upgrade everything in your home until prices stabilize and become widespread.
Year of the AI (Intelligent) PC
If there’s one term you’re guaranteed to hear tons throughout 2024, it’s “AI PC.” This is a term both Intel and AMD are using to describe computers equipped with chips that have NPUs, or neural processing units. Similar to how GPUs speed up graphic processing for gaming, NPUs offload artificial intelligence tasks more efficiently. For Windows 11, this is largely limited to Microsoft’s Studio Effects, which can blur your video chat backgrounds or boost your lighting. However, more Windows AI features are said to be on the way (Microsoft’s effort to bring Copilot AI everywhere is a big sign), and companies like Adobe and Audacity are also developing NPU-supported features for their applications.
Chipmakers have been chasing higher clock speeds, smaller process designs, and other architectural upgrades like 3D transistors for years to make their hardware faster and more efficient. Moving toward mobile chip designs, like Apple’s Silicon, is another way to accelerate computational possibilities while reducing power consumption. While Intel, AMD, and other companies are also focusing more on GPUs to boost basic gaming performance and alleviate some of the load of creative tasks like media encoding. NPUs are the latest tool chips that designers can rely on and have the potential to completely change how we use our computers (or at least offer a bit more power and battery life for ultra-portable devices).
Real Wireless TV
Displace made some noise at CES 2023 with its truly wireless TV that can be mounted just about anywhere, even suction-cupped to a window. The company’s demo left us with a lot of questions since it showed off CES-typical prototypes and wasn’t ready to discuss the product’s basic details. The company is returning to Vegas this year and has already announced what it plans to showcase.
Displace is initially saying two dimensions of TV will be introduced: the 27-inch Displace Mini and the 55-inch Displace Flex. The screen we saw earlier this year was also 55 inches, but the biggest difference between it and this new version is that the Flex connects to an optional magnetic wireless charging stand. According to the company, both the Flex and the Mini will have enough battery life to watch content for six hours a day for a month. There’s no pricing for these yet, but they’ll be available for pre-order on January 9, so we’ll learn soon. Displace also said it would showcase a 110-inch model at CES, though details are scarce.
The original version’s price has increased since last CES: it’s now $4,499, and orders won’t ship until mid-2024. The new Mini and Flex aren’t expected to hit the market until late next year, either. The biggest thing we’re looking for at CES is a status update. Are the units brighter? Has there been a significant upgrade since the first prototype? How much will extra swappable batteries cost? Does the company really seem ready to ship in the next 6-12 months?
Displace also announced an AI-based shopping platform for its TVs. The technology can analyze a paused scene for items that could be for sale using the same motion controls that control TV watching. The system also allows for quick purchases by bringing an NFC-enabled phone or watch near the TV or using a mobile app. Displace says the target for its products has always been ambient computing, and this shopping platform is the first step towards that. This is also a way for the company to make money after the first sale of its TVs.
